Baru is an area of the Golden Coast that isn't so golden. It lies in the middle ground between an over grown ancient rainforest that is as solid as a brick wall, nearly impossible to enter, a barren desolate desert (The Koiyan desert) and the beginning of the mountain range that runs along the coast.

The people of Baru are very fearful of the forest( the forest is referred to as the evil forest, but has never been given a name as that would give it's evil more strength in the belief system of the Baruans) as any who have entered it have never returned, so they work the difficult land that is surrounded on all sides by something great, but they stay in the middle nothing land. The families work very hard to survive on their farms and the weather can be very tumultuous, floods and draughts are not uncommon, but they change quickly with the seasons and the people usually survive. They have seen foreigners come and go, usually taking their people away as slaves or using them and their goods up as they threaten and harass their way through unfair trades and "business" dealings. Never once has a positive encounter happened with a foreigner and no Baruan trusts them.

A non-violent people, who sing and chant to their Gods they have never done battle, they are deathly afraid of the Hansaii warriors of the desert and the evil spirits of the woods. They live, both literally and figuratively, in the middle of nowhere. They believe in animal spirits and guides and dream guardians of the sole.

They drink the the pulverized Karuba bean to reach out their spirit guides and speak to them. They believe that someday the Gods will bestow upon them all that is heaven on Earth, a coming of glory that will lift the people of their land above all others.
