A King Ascends

The characters have roles in the king's court. The aging king is the last of his house and does not have any heir to succeed him. Not that it would matter. Succession rarely happens in a strait line--or cleanly. However because of an ancient pact between the noble houses it does tend to be fairly peaceful. That is, no all out war--but sometimes people just happen to die (read: just happen to get assassinated).

The reason why all of that matters is that shortly after the game starts the king will die leaving a power vacuum for the game to take place in.

Sessions

First Session--World Burning--Planning

The plan for this session is to flesh out the world. It will need to be decided what factions exist. Also the noble houses will need to be fleshed out slightly. Lastly rough character concepts will need to be created.

Factions

The goal of this part of the session will be to determine what elements of the world are important. Is there a nearby dwarven hold that has frequent relations with this kingdom? Is the church particularly strong? Is the society of mages the real power in the world?

For each faction selected there should be a one sentence explanation of how they are important.

Noble Houses

5 to 7 noble houses will need to be created. For each house a character trait and a minor call-on or die trait will need to be selected. Any characters from a noble house will have access to these traits for free.

A number of factions and noble houses were created/decided on see appropriate sections of this page. Also it was decide that the PCs would be major advisers in two of the noble houses.
